Engadget brings us the scoop that the HTC Hero has passed the FCC with 3g bands for AT&T's network. While the Hero itself seems to have a love/hate relationship with most Android users, you are either indifferent or infuriated to learn that it's likely AT&T bound.
Perhaps the bigger news is that coupled with the HTC Lancaster, AT&T will soon be sporting two Android devices: one with touch-only, and one with a QWERTY. Sound familiar? It should. T-Mobile is barely beating AT&T to the punch, after all the time boasting Android support.
Time to kick it up a notch, T-Mobile, lest the other carriers beat you at your own game!

Wow, I don't get why AT&T needs ALOT of new phones? Like Palm Eos, iPhone 3G/3GS, etc. If they get the Lancaster I wouldn't be pissed cause that phone just sucks. Man AT&T, you don't need all of these phones. Stop being a bitch and hogging them all.
Meh...I was super pissed that the Lancaster was going to AT&T until the specs came out. I never liked the looks of the Hero hardware and much prefered the My Touch 3G hardware with the tweaks that T-Mobile made to it. I do like the looks of Sense UI, but I would still question how new updates from google will work. Think about it, google releases an update to the masses, HTC has to either get it early to make it compatable with Sense UI, or they get it at the same time, and it gets pushed out to the Hero way later since they may have to modify it.....Still sticking with the Magic here unless a really great looking android with a full qwerty comes out. And no, I am not talking about the Samsung Bigfoot, or the Motorola Morrison, neither look high end to me. Also lets not forget, more android phones on the market equals more apps!
Stop being a bitch and hogging them all.
lol...... u made my day!
Hmmm....
T-Mobile has a high-end qwerty phone and touch-only phone...
At&t has a cheap texter phone and a higher end touch-only phone.
Well, I don't understand At&t's decision.... yes the Hero is amazing, but wouldn't someone with At&t in market for a touch-only phone, get an iPhone?
That's true TareX, but come to think of it, I don't remember seeing if AT&T's exclusive iPhone contract was going to survive. Maybe they're diversifying as a result?
Still, I have to admit...my frustration is growing. So far the only high-end Android phone I'm seeing is the Samsung Galaxy/i7500, and it has no QWERTY!
It's freaking JULY and I'm not seeing anything of note in the Android QWERTY department. This does not bode well for Earthrazer's sunny disposition...
another Epic fail for Tmobile to capture a market that is craving more Android phones. Sigh
well they can have the hero and lancaster. they're both pieces of poopoo kaka peepee. LOL
hopefully the G1's actaully successor (read: G2) actually comes out this year. i dont have any high-tech gadget right now. im probably gunna get an iPod touch [for free] so that will hold out my inner geek for hopefully another 6-8 months.
oh yeah. I thought there was the TMobile Bright Lights thing? Any good news come out of that or was it just the CSR training that everyone thought it was.
to tell you the truth, i have absolutely no idea wtf the Bright Lights were.
Man im so pissed! why does at&t always get the phones with the better specs and better ui. ya T-mobile got android first but then we are stuck with lower end android devices for a while, while AT&T gets the higher end android. when can T-mobile expect an HTC android with Sense and flash?
I agree. The mere fact that AT&T is picking up Android at all is bad for T-Mobile. Add in all the rumors of Sprint and Verizon later this year and T-Mobile might just be about to get PWNED at their own Android game.
Attention T-Mobile USA: Somebody better get off their ass and get some high end Android phones!
The scuttlebut has pretty much been that AT&T will loose the exclusivity deal with the iphone and we'll more than likely see it over on the big red V as well. So, yeah, I also do agree that this move - AT&T getting more into the Android thing - is them diversifying what they've got selection-wise.
Now, are there - or were there - a lot of people that swapped out their iphones for Android devices? In my experience it's been the other way around. I'm sure there are a few people out there that preferred the 'droid to the fruit, but I have my doubts that it was even a percentage point. So, while AT&T may be getting into Android....I think it's something of a moot point. I will admit that I think, overall, it's good that they are. More users means better and cooler apps. AT&T has a pretty large user footprint, so they should bring in a couple two or three Android users and developers.
I'm not going to say that I'm all that excited about AT&T getting a lot of good high-end Android devices at the expense of T-Mobile, and I do agree that T-Mobile has, at least outwardly, seemed a little slow on the uptake to get out those higher end devices. But then, who knows what they've got in the cooker - we might see some really kick arse phones come out soon.
Only time....well, you know the rest.
Everybody is now looking to the G2 to be T-Mobile's Android savior...
But since it most likely won't have Tegra, well, chances are it will be a cosmetic improvement, like TmoJoe said an insider told him, in an article a few weeks ago...
T-Mobile deserved to get punished!
they put most of eggs on Andriod, but sorry, you got betrayed BIG TIME!!!

well count on the iPhone exclusitivy evaporating next summer. and unless Verizon has LTE nationwide by then (ya right!), they wont get the iPhone since Apple wont make a CDMA one. so chances are T-Mobile might get an iPhone. though i am [kinda] anti-iPhone, it will attract a lot of customers.
i really want at&t to get the lancaster and hero cuz that means t-mobile will step it up!
Well, T-Mobile USA will be 2-3 months behind Europe when they finally launch the Ion/Magic/MyTouch.
For those disappointed about the Hero, I'm guessing T-Mobile saw the MyTouch and Hero as somewhat similar devices (hardware-wise) and opted to bid on the first one available. It appears they're holding their 3rd Android salvo for the Samsung I7500, which has hardware differentiation from the MyTouch and Hero.
For those purely interested in Android, more phones to more carriers is a good thing.

Not that I want to turn this into another iphone thread, but you may recall that it's actually been rumored that Apple approached Verizon first with the iphone - and they rejected it because they didn't like the lack of control that they would have had with the device. Of course now they are kicking themselves in the rear for not jumping all over it. I would expect the next carrier of the device to be Verizon.
If I'm wrong, I will of course admit to being so.
yes they did approach them, but they hadnt made the phone yet. if would take quite a while for Apple to make a CDMA phone, especially one with no problems considering they're used to GSM.
I'm done commenting on the iphone in this thread.
To get back to the topic at hand, namely the Hero NOT coming to T-Mobile, it also looks as though it is rumored to head over to Sprint as well. Interesting.
If the iPhone came to T-Mobile. I will make out with the CEO. AT&T & Sprint can be phone hogs for all I care.
ok back on topic.
